Annual Food Justice Camp coming up July 27-31

Our annual Food Justice Camp is coming up July 27-31, 2006. This year’s Food Justice Camp will be held at the Marin Headlands Institute.

The camp will convene 25 youth, ages 15-21, from low-income communities in the San Francisco Bay Area to learn about the social and economic inequalities in today’s food system and how low-income, inner-city communities are disproportionately affected by limited access to healthy foods and high rates of diet-related chronic diseases.

The camp will also introduce the youth participants to basic concepts about local food systems and sustainable agriculture and will include field trips to local farms and gardens.

This camp will feature presentations and workshops led by food justice organizations in the Bay Area to look closely at the root causes of unequal food access, the health problems that stem from limited access and what solutions are being pursued in various communities to increase food access and improve community health.

This year’s camp is being organized by three lead organizations from these low-income communities: Peoples’ Grocery, Farm Fresh Choice, and Literacy for Environmental Justice. Additional partnering organizations will include Oakland Based Urban Gardens, Berkeley Youth Alternatives, EBAYC and the G.E.O. Project.

The camp is now full and we are unable to add any more participants. However, if you want to be a participate in this camp in some way please attend our event in front of Oakland city hall on Monday July 31 at noon, which is being organized in solidarity with “Eat In, Act Out Week”.
