California’s Changing Face: Our Greatest Advantage

The future of California’s racial and ethnic makeup is going to be quite different from what it has been in the past. California’s minority population became the majority last year. Latinos now make up nearly one-third of the state’s population and are predicted to become the largest racial/ethnic group in the state within a decade. A high inflow of immigrant communities places California’s status as the nation’s most diverse big state and new immigrant communities are likely to continue to grow into a more significant population in the coming years.

These trends mean big changes in the social and cultural composition of California’s communities. A different multi-cultural makeup in California’s future will affect many aspects of our economy and way of life. These trends will also have a big impact on our food system as pressure rises to meet the cultural food demands of new majority cultural groups. An increasing multicultural face in California will present new opportunities and challenges to cater to these large cultural groups that have vastly different tastes and desires than the consumers of the past.

For companies that have built their businesses around marketing to a specific population, such as how the organic food industry has crafted its offer to primarily white consumers, adapting to rapid changes in an increasing multicultural marketplace and catering to a more diverse consumer base will be essential for their long-term success. We may see a shake up in the food industry as newer companies with an understanding of the values and cultures of California’s diverse peoples craft their offers to the fast growing populations and gain a competitive advantage over older and larger companies that may be slower to make changes.

We at People’s Grocery see these changes as one of the greatest sources of success for our food retail business, People’s Grocery Market. We have years of experience serving and working in communities of cultural diversity. Our staff is extremely diverse, reflects the community we serve, and has a keen of understanding of the wants and needs of residents from diverse cultural backgrounds. People’s Grocery Market will be well positioned to serve and rally these diverse communities and will craft many of its offers to these cultural groups. California’s changing racial/ethnic face presents us with one of our greatest strengths and will help us carve out a unique space in the food industry and food system. We have already demonstrated our leadership and innovation in working with diverse communities and we plan to continue to strengthen our role as California’s cultural face changes.
