food justice camp a success

We held our annual summer youth food justice camp last week. There were about 25 low-income youth from all over the Bay Area. Most of them were affiliated with a food justice organization and had some previous exposure to food justice issues.

The camp featured all kinds of educational workshops, games and activities. Many of them were led by the youth themselves. The youth also got to eat healthy food and try new foods they had never had before.

The camp created a very close and safe setting for the youth and adults to get really deep into the issues revolving around food access and food justice in their communities. In many ways we hit the deeper veins of the systemic disparities in our food system and economy.

In the end the everyone felt very empowered and elated from such a great experience. Many strong binds were made between youth from different communities. The Bay Area food justice movement is definitely stronger from this camp and we expect some good things to come out of the relationships that have been established. I love all the work and nutrition I have read and seen your company influence on the Okalnd community. If it were not for the work and guidance of healthy eating and living, you have shown, I believe that our community was going to die. You have truly given a reason to live again. Always keep up your great works and insite of what is good and healthy to eat and grow. I have changed my and my children’s eating habits and am wanting to start a organic garden.
