Our first government funding
After four years People’s Grocery applied for its first government grant….and got funded! We just received a grant from the Local Food and Nutrition Education Program of the California Department of Health Services to fund the Community Education and Outreach Program for the next two years. This is a great opportunity to grow and stabilize our education work. The grant will fund the following:
1) Adult Nutritional Cooking Class – A free, 6-week evening courses for adult residents focused on the preparation of balanced meals using healthy ingredients.
2) Garden Nutrition Program – Combines gardening activities, nutrition workshops and cooking classes to deliver fun and hands-on education to the children and youth attending two local schools.
3) Peer-2-Peer Education Program – Founded by a group of youth staff members to develop workshops and presentations on nutrition, food preferences and healthy eating targeted to elementary, middle and high schools, after school programs, church groups and special events.
4) Be-Heal-thy Team – Specializes in events organizing, community tasting events and street-level outreach to promote healthy eating and nutrition.
5) Food & Justice Camp – A summer camp organized in collaboration with other local food justice organizations to educate low-income youth about local food systems, sustainable agriculture, healthy eating, nutrition and physical activity.
