Speak-Out and Eat-In For A Fair and Healthy Farm Bill
On Wednesday Feb. 13th at 12pm a very important event will be taking place to try to turn the direction of the 2007 Farm Bill in favor of farmers, urban folks and the environment. People will gather at the Farmers’ Market at UN Plaza to call upon House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Joe Baca and Dennis Cardoza, who are likely to sit on the Farm Bill conference committee, to pass a Fair and Healthy Food and Farm Bill as soon as possible that stops subsidizing corporate agribusiness at the expense of public health and invests our tax dollars into creating a sustainable, healthy, community-driven and just food system.
This is such an important issue right now that anyone who cares about justice, health and sustainability needs to be involved in. Because while the Farm Bill impacts all Americans, it has the greatest impact on the most vulnerable Americans: small farmers, farm workers and the urban poor who often can not get basic healthy food. It’s time for the Farm Bill to stop serving the interests of large-scale agriculture corporations and start serving the interests of those who need it the most.
A fair and healthy Farm Bill could play a crucial role in transforming many aspects of our society. It could provide a dignified living for both small farmers and farm workers. It could help address the crisis of obesity and chronic disease that so many Americans face. A fair and healthy Farm Bill could help address our environmental problems and climate change by helping food to be grown and transported more sustainably . And it could ensure that all Americans, regardless of social or economic status, have access to healthy and affordable foods.
The Farm Bill is for everyone, not just for the few who can wield power and influence over it. It’s time that the Farm Bill is reclaimed for all American people and sets America back on a path aligned with our values and ideals.
Please attend this event and spread the word!
