Youth testimony from Growing Justice Program

Here’s a brief testimony from one of the youth who was in our Growing Justice Youth Program this summer……

My name is Jennifer Copto. Am 15 years old. I was born in Mexico on 1993. I am a summer youth intern for People’s Grocery. People’s Grocery is a great program/job, and it’s different from all other programs/jobs. We grow all fresh organic fruits and vegetables because we are trying really hard to help the West Oakland Community. I’ve had so many good experiences in this first five weeks I’ve been working for P.G. For example, there was this time when two of our peers did an activity for us (Summer Youth Interns), called ‘What You’re Really Eating,’ which was basically about learning how much information simple labels can give about-calories, minerals, sugars, fats, and many other things that labels have of products we buy. For me it was a real good experience learning about how much important information labels can give you. Also knowing that it can help us care more for our health. Also that it can be a real good help.

Another good experience I have and that am enjoying is working on the two gardens P.G. have right now. I say that because I had never worked in gardens or farms before. So for me this is really good because it’s like I am learning new things from working on the gardens and the farm we have. Things that i had never experienced before, like planting the seeds. To tell you the truth I didn’t even know the process that seeds had to go through before being planted on the ground. I always thought that everything was so easy. Like just having to buy the seeds and get home/garden/farm, dig a hole in the ground throw the seed in and then just water it, and wait for it to grow by it self with no care or anything. But now i realize that it’s not that simple to grow things. Especially if you want it to grow right and beautiful.

Thanks a lot P.G for giving this opportunity. Also I am really proud of myself for giving taking this chance of accepting this great summer job, which really does not feel like a job…….Sometimes…..jajaja!!!
